The Effect of Family Income on Children`s Study Time outside School - Focusing on the Mediating Effects of Parenting Styles -

|
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of family income on children`s study time outside school. The focus is to analyze the mediating effects of the parenting styles on the relationship between family income and children`s study time outside school. The data analyzed is 4th Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS). Study time outside school is divided into two kinds of time: private education time and individual study time. The results of analysis are as such: Firstly, higher family income has effects of lengthening private education time and individual study time. Secondly, parents` supervision level, one of parenting styles, has mediating effects on the relationship between family income and children`s individual study time. As it were, the family income has positive relation with parents` supervision level, and higher parents` supervision level brings longer individual study time outside school. Parents` supervision dose not have significant relation with private education time. Thirdly, parenting inconsistency, parents` over-expectation, reasonal explanation, neglect and abuse don`t have mediating effects at all. They don`t have significant correlation with family income and children`s study time outside school. These results show that the higher family income, parents tend to know more about their children`s time use. It makes possible to check their children`s individual study time outside school. This study reveals some parts of the mechanism how the children`s educational attainment are differentiated according to family income level in the middle school stage.
